Woah… / Brain Dump

Posted on Friday 17 August 2007

…haven’t posted in a long, long time.

This post isn’t going to go into depth on anything, just a quick catch-up.

I’ve spent most of the past three weeks preparing to move a data center from Watertown, MA to North Andover, MA. The tricky part, of course, is that there’s a live website on the servers that need to move, which means downtime and stress and all of that.

The hours were very, very long for a couple of weeks there — A few 18+ hour days, with slightly shorter ones filling the rest of the time.

In the end, almost everything got done in time, which is gratifying. It didn’t go perfectly, but everything that I was responsible for went as well as could possibly be hoped. The overall move plan, which I put together, was solid.

I did good, is what I’m trying to say. Actually, I did real good.

In the end, the only casualty of the move was the completeness of the nail on my left index finger. I’m beginning to understand why people don’t like breaking nails (it hurts), and to develop a sense of amazement that anyone would grow their fingernails out on purpose. Sacrifice for beauty and all that, sure…but geez, it’s painful.

I have taken a few hours off from work here and there to play ultimate; the annoying plantar fasciitis that I’ve been carrying around is subsiding a bit, so I can actually kind of run, too. Last weekend I spent about 36 hours in New Hampshire, though I had to skip Sunday’s games in order to finish data center move prep. The weekend before it was the hat league tourney on Saturday, and a day of playing with FNG at Hingham.

Wednesday afternoon, the day after the move, Kate and I went to a Red Sox game. The Sox lost, which is a shame, but the evening was a lovely break from the work-work-work schedule of the couple of weeks prior. I hadn’t had quite enough time to sleep beforehand, though, and so I barely remember the game itself.

And, for now, that’s the brain dump. Recovery is happening, albeit slowly, and by the end of the weekend I should be back to normal (or as normal as ever, anyway).

Surely your brain has some new things in it to dump by now, yes?
