Ready to go…

Headed towards West Virginia in about 8 hours, to spend a week helping my Aunt out with her house.
Tomorrow night I’ll most likely be somewhere around Carlisle, PA, and then down to the farm on Tuesday. Should be back sometime around the 7th (since I want to vote!), but return plans are [...]

Name that Kid!

I know this is ridiculous, but Name Voyager is actually pretty interesting.
It seems that “Ian” is the 68th most common name given to boys born in the US, and has been enjoying a rather dramatic upsurge in popularity over the past 50 years or so.
“Grace” is the 14th most common name given to [...]

Obama, 2

Jonathan Alter on why Barack Obama could knock Hillary out of the Presidential race.
See Obama, 1 for more on what I think of Barack. (Long story short: I’ve been hoping against hope that he’d jump in for 2008 since, oh, around when he was elected to the Senate.)

Paxilback

Courtesy of Taz, this is way way too funny.

News

Ultimate in today’s Boston Globe. A pretty good article, and written for folks who don’t play themselves…

Straw

( Family )

A couple of photos of the house that my aunt Em is building in West Virginia. The walls are going to be made of strawbales for insulation, which is the coolest thing ever.
In a couple of weeks I’m headed out there to help get the strawbales in to place, and maybe to [...]

Going Green

My friend Lyrica explaining green building on Chicago’s ABC morning show. Click on the “ABC 7″ link to view the video.
Awesome!

Your tax dollars at work

Republicans stuck $20 million into a military appropriations bill.
The reason: it’s a lump-sum set-aside for a “celebration of success” in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Apparently the same money was allocated in 2005 (for FY 06), but, oddly, didn’t get spent. Imagine that.

Linguistics

I suspect that most who are going to read this have at least noted the issues surrounding Mark Foley, the Republican Rep from Florida who resigned on Friday.
For those who haven’t, the basic issue is this: it’s come to light that over the past three or four years Foley has been sending sexually explicit text [...]

Forget Iraq. Rebuild New Orleans.

Bit late getting to this one, but I highly recommend Anna’s early September posts from New Orleans as a quick look at the state of that city.
