Grab over the D for a score

The photo above was taken about a quarter second after the really good part of the play, where I actually went over the defender’s head to grab the disc. None the less, it’s a pretty decent shot. (and yes, I know I have a big, big, booty.)

Spent the weekend down at Wildwood, playing some beach ultimate. Fun times. Flew down to Philly, which was an annoying experience thanks to thunderstorms over the east coast and the delays that resulted. Met up with Little Karl there, and we drove down to the shore, arriving at 3:30 AM. After a short 6 hours of sleep, spent all day Saturday in the heat (90+) and sun (not a cloud in the sky), running around. Lots of fun times, had a couple of nice bids for discs, a couple of which I actually got. Ended up catching more scores than I threw, which is a unique experience for me. FNG took a lot of men for 2-2 — around 8 or 9 — so no one got all that much playing time. But that’s okay. It was hot and humid and more playing time would have been a little too much, I think.

Saturday night we rocked the party for a bit, though we would have rocked it a little more if RS hadn’t kicked over a full pitcher of Sam Adams Summer Ale. Being dorks, we split into North/South (of the Charles) teams — and went lights and darks — to boat race. Grabbed some pizza, showered, and then we wandered the boardwalk for a while. Took a shot at the 75-mph batting cage, which would have been a lot easier if I hadn’t had three pints of beer at that point.

Sunday was another hot day, getting up to about 93 at the peak. Again, no clouds anywhere. We were seeded somewhere around the halfway mark of the lower bracket, after going 1-3 on Saturday. The first game was very close, and featured me almost killing a guy my size, who had stopped to camp under a slowly descending hammer. I closed to make the D, got in the air, got the disc 18 inches or so higher than him, and in the process caught the small of his back with my knee. Ouch. Fortunately, he recovered okay. Second game was an easy win, pretty much a blowout, and that took us to finals. Which we lost. Badly.

Drove back to Philly with Karl. Turned out that even though I was flying US Air, and he was flying United, we were on the same plane. Kate was kind enough to pick us up at the airport, and I made it home to get some sleep and ibuprofin.

All in all, a great weekend. Also, a very dehydrating weekend. But that’s okay.

More later; doctor’s appointment this afternoon, but there’s a lot going on, and I’ll try to catch up the masses who read this fun little blog o’ mine.

    Nice grab, Ian….

I was going to make some remark about you doing that more often on Junk, but then I remembered that my first huck ever was to you (savannah 2002)… so I can’t complain too much…
