Back to back to back to…

My back still hurts, which is too bad, but a little less than yesterday. I’m also being more aggressive with the ibuprofin, and that seems to help a bit.
Tomorrow is the first ultimate practice of the year. Being able to throw for that is all I’m really shooting for right now.
Today also kicks [...]

Ow

Stupid freakin’ back is hurting again. I pulled a muscle a couple of weeks ago, and thought it was healed, but now it’s acting up again. And it hurts. A lot. And it makes it very tough to sleep. Pthpt.

Love and Life

I had an e-mail exchange with my mom today. She’s been giving me a hard time lately, as an example of “twentysomething, going-on-thirtysomething” who has “a good job, money, friends, playtime, and want little beyond that.” Granted, the phrasing is a little bit hyperbolic, but the point comes across, I think. She [...]

Math Rocks

BusinessWeek explains why math people will rule the world: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_04/b3968001.htm

BIRT

( Tech )

I’ve spent the past couple of weeks figuring out how to use BIRT, or “Business Intelligence and Reporting Tool”. It’s an extension to the Eclipse IDE that simplifies report design/development.
Basically, BIRT provides a framework within which to specify the queries that get information, and the formating/etc that happens to that information once [...]

Very Tired

Long class today, a little hectic. If I heard correctly, 4 of the kids in my class had already been suspended from the program (for Monday) by the time they walked into my room. Which, of course, meant that they had no particular reason not to cause a big stink, and made classroom [...]

God and Politics

This Snopes page was pointed out to me yesterday. Pretty funny stuff.

Hilarious

Go read the post “From conflict to mutual benefit” on Michael Green’s blog. Seriously. It’s wicked funny.
(He doesn’t have his posts anchored, so I can’t point to the specific post; it’s from March 11th, and they’re in chronological order.)

Who Turned The Cold Back On?

Haven’t written in a while, and here’s hoping that my loyal readers (yes, both of you) aren’t too disappointed.
I woke up this morning, very early because of maintenance work on the Big Ass File Server, and walked outside a little before 6:30 AM. It was chilly, but for the first time this [...]

I’ve always wanted to be a guru

This was passed along to me today…
http://www.startyourownreligion.org/
I initially thought of my mom, but she’s got that whole “Jesus” thing going on. But I can think of a few other folks who read this blog who might be interested…
Actually, now that I think about it, I wonder whether Kali would qualify…

Third Thoughts

The more I think about it, the more I think that my anxiety about this class is partly because of my own insistence on perfection from myself. I want to do everything really, really well, and when I’m not sure that I’m actually going to meet my own expectations I tend to run away. [...]

Second thoughts

I keep thinking that I should have reflected a little bit longer on why I left teaching, before agreeing to do this course for Citizen Schools.
Here’s the thing: the topic that I’m teaching I find fascinating. But I have little energy for “moderating” the topic for 12-14 year olds, which makes the whole process [...]

One for all you legal eagles

Because I know there are a lot of total nurds who read this blog…
Draft of my first paper for my class on the First Amendment. The topic: “Define what the Supreme Court means by Clear and Present Danger, and the circumstances under which the government may prevent publication.” It’s the first draft, and [...]

I made it!

My first class for the kiddies is over, and I made it through in one piece. It wasn’t very scary, either.
My next mission (after tonight’s The New Thirty show, I mean) is my first paper for the First Amendment class that I’m taking.
The topic:
Define what the Supreme Court means by clear and [...]

A little panic is good for the heart

First Citizen Schools class is tomorrow, and I’m having a fun little evening of panic. Am I prepared? Ack! What the hell am I doing? AH! And so on, and on, and on…
On the upside, I’m pretty sure that I am prepared; I know what I’m going to teach, I [...]

Paralysis

A couple of days ago I discovered that Jen Bird and her husband, David, had a baby boy; Daniel James Bird (possibly to be know as “baby bird” for the rest of his life) was born on January 25, 2006, in Pittsburgh, PA.
I consider this to be particularly auspiscious for two reasons:
- Daniel’s [...]
